Who will WIN this matchup?
California Golden Bears (7-1)
Seton Hall Pirates (6-2)
• The line for this game is Seton Hall by 1 point.
• California senior point guard Sam Singer has been overshadowed by the emergence of freshman star Charlie Moore, but the steady veteran remains a key part of coach Cuonzo Martin’s rotation. Singer looks to build on his best showing of the young season on Wednesday as the Bears face Seton Hall at the Pearl Harbor Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.
• Preseason All-American forward Ivan Rabb injured his left hand in Saturday’s victory over Alcorn State and clearly was limited on Tuesday, when he missed his first five shots and finished with a season-low six points but a game-high 11 rebounds. The 6-11, 220-pound sophomore, who is averaging 17.5 points and 10.3 rebounds while shooting 59.1 percent, told reporters late Wednesday that he’ll be fine to play against the Pirates. The Bears are riding a five-game winning streak and boast a rebounding margin of plus-11.8, with 7-foot center Kingsley Okoroh playing well in place of injured starter Kameron Rooks.
• Khadeen Carrington scored a game-high 19 points in Tuesday’s win over Hawaii, but forward Desi Rodriguez gave the Pirates a scare when he exited briefly with a thigh injury before returning to finish with 11 points and four steals. Coach Kevin Willard’s squad has outrebounded seven of its first eight opponents but will need a strong performance from Rodriguez, as well as forwards Michael Nzei and Angel Delgado, against Cal’s formidable frontline. Freshman guard Myles Powell earned his second straight start Tuesday after making seven 3-pointers in a win over Columbia, but he was held to seven points on 2-of-8 shooting against Hawaii.
• Cal won the only previous meeting between the teams during the 1973-74 season.
• Seton Hall is 62-19 in non-conference games under Willard.
• The Bears are limiting opponents to 35 percent shooting.
