The Musketeers boast one of the best backcourt trios in the country with juniors Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura, along with sophomore Edmond Sumner, and received a strong balanced effort in Monday’s 86-53 victory over Buffalo.

Xavier will need another strong effort against improving Missouri, which rolled to a big win over Alabama A&M in its opener with a promising performance from freshman guard Frankie Hughes. The 6-4 Hughes scored 23 points to tie all-time great Steve Stipanovich for the most in a debut for a freshman in the program’s history.

Coach Chris Mack told reporters his team took a step forward against Buffalo after struggling in some phases against Lehigh in an 84-81 season-opening win last Friday. The Musketeers got three strong performances off the bench as freshman forward Tyrique Jones hauled in 11 rebounds, freshman guard Quentin Goodin had 11 points and four assists and junior transfer RaShid Gaston scored nine with seven rebounds. Bluiett has averaged 19 points, Sumner 18.5 and Macura 15.5 (18 versus Buffalo) and are shooting 47.3 percent from the field.

While Hughes took a leading role, 6-6 freshman forward Willie Jackson also had a solid debut in the 99-44 victory over Alabama A&M with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior forward Russell Woods was the only other player scoring in double figures in the opener with 12 points, but nine different players tallied at least seven while the Tigers shot 62.5 percent from the floor.

Xavier is 18-5 against SEC members since 2008, including a pair of victories against Missouri – 78-66 last season.
