Georgia travels to Georgia Tech on Saturday for the latest installment of their cross-state rivalry, and both teams have experienced mixed results through the season’s first 10 games. The Bulldogs nearly knocked off No. 20 Arizona State last weekend before blowing a big lead and saw a 17-point lead nearly evaporate in Tuesday’s win over Oakland, while the Yellow Jackets were stunned at home by Gardner-Webb on Monday, only to turn around and win Wednesday at Arkansas. Both teams can be labeled as in the rebuilding stage – neither is the winningest Division I program in the state since 2013 (Georgia State) – and a victory Saturday would provide the winner a big boost with conference play starting in two weeks.

The Yellow Jackets got 20 points from Jose Alvarado and an inspired effort to upend the Razorbacks, just 48 hours after losing by 10 points to Gardner-Webb. “We didn’t do a good job on Monday and partly, that’s based on me,” Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner told the media after the Arkansas victory. “Monday, we weren’t good, and (Wednesday) we were much better.”

Claxton leads the SEC in rebounding at 9.6 per contest and is averaging 12.6 points per game, teamed up with Hammonds (15.1 points, 6.8 rebounds per game) to form a strong forward duo. Hammonds recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds against Oakland. Georgia outrebounds its opponents by an average of 7.7 per game and ranks 10th in the nation in blocked shots per contest (6.1).

• Texas transfer James Banks III has provided a huge boost since joining the Yellow Jackets after the season opener, finishing with 14 points and 14 rebounds Wednesday, and has four double-doubles in his past five games. Alvarado played all 40 minutes Monday and Wednesday, shooting a combined 17-of-31 from the field. The Yellow Jackets are tied for 15th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 61 points per game.

Georgia Tech ranks 23rd nationally in opposing field-goal percentage (38.1 percent), while Georgia is 27th in the country (38.2 percent).

The Yellow Jackets lead the series 103-91 and are 60-29 in games held on Georgia Tech’s campus, but the Bulldogs have won the past three matchups.

Claxton has led or tied for the team lead in scoring three times, in rebounding seven times, in assists four times, in blocks nine times and in steals seven times.
