Who will WIN this matchup?
Towson Tigers (3-7)
Tulane Green Wave (4-6)
Current odds:
Towson Tigers: (+155)
Tulane Green Wave: (-175)
• The line for this game is Tulane by 3.5 points.
• Tulane isn’t exactly an offensive powerhouse, ranking 10th in the 12-team American Athletic Conference and 252nd in Division I in scoring offense at 71.1 points per game, but there are no shortage of players capable of helping the team improve those marks as the season progresses. The Green Wave seek their third win in four games Friday when they meet Towson in the first of two games each will play at the Boardwalk Battle in Atlantic City, N.J. Samir Sehic became the fifth Tulane player to score at least 20 points in a game Monday when he snapped out of a scoring slump that lasted nearly a month with a career-high 28 points on 11-of-15 from the field as the Green Wave defeated Texas Southern.
• The Tigers continued their recent trend of engaging in nail-biters Tuesday by playing their fourth straight game decided by six points or fewer, defeating 2017-18 NCAA Tournament darling UMBC 80-76 in double overtime. Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week Brian Fobbs buried a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 10 seconds left in the second extra period to end Towson’s three-game losing streak.
• Fobbs (16.4 points, 5.7 rebounds) finished with a career-high 32 points Tuesday on 6-of-12 shooting beyond the arc and 10-of-10 from the foul line; since a slow five-game start to the season in which he failed to exceed 12 points, the 6-4 junior is averaging 23 points over his last five. Duquesne transfer Nakye Sanders (9.1, 5.4) has been a steady and efficient offensive contributor for most of the year, converting 60 percent of his field-goal attempts. Junior forward Dennis Tunstall (5.4, 7.9) still has only one double-digit scoring performance to his credit in his career, but he recorded his second double-figure rebounding effort in three outings with a career-high 15 boards versus the Retrievers.
• Coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. was particularly proud of the Green Wave’s defense against Texas Southern, holding the Tigers to 22 points in the first half – the fewest by a Tulane opponent this season – and their leading scorer (7-2 center Trayvon Reed) 10 points below his season average of 15 points. “I felt like our guys did a terrific job defensively, especially in the first half. We had over 20 deflections in the game. The biggest thing that showed in practice this week was our effort, and I think it showed tonight,” Dunleavy said. Sehic (11.6 points, 7.3 rebounds) joined leading scorer Caleb Daniels (16.7 points), Jordan Cornish (12.3), Shakwon Barrett (9.2) and Kevin Zhang (7.8) as Green Wave players who have reached the 20-point mark in 2018-19.
• Daniels has reached double figures in nine straight outings after he was held to five points in a season-opening loss to Florida State on Nov. 11.
• Fobbs has posted 25 or more points in three of Towson’s last four games and led the team in scoring in each of the last six contests.
• The Green Wave have connected on seven or fewer 3-pointers in four straight and six of their last seven games.
