• Top-seed Dominic Thiem squandered a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker and lost the first set in a disappointing fashion. However, he regained his composure and controlled the following two sets to overcome the in-form and dangerous Aslan Karatsev in the second round on Wednesday, 6-7 6-3 6-2.

• Roberto Bautista Agut got the better of big-serving opponents in consecutive matches to confirm his place in the quarterfinal of ATP Doha. He needed a three-set comeback effort against Reilly Opelka in the first round but raced to a dominant straight-set win over the in-form Alexander Bublik in the second, 4-6 6-3 6-4 and 6-4 6-3, respectively.
